Game Logs: December 20th, 2003
With the MSU students out on Christmas break and with the proximity of Christmas, the December 20 Lansing Boardgamers meeting turned into the Taylor family Carcassonne tournament. David (from 21st Century games) brought out his Ark of the Covenant game. Ark of the Covenant, from Inspiration games, is a direct Carcassone descendant. It takes elements from the original Carcassonne and Carcassonne: Hunters and Gathers for a nice blend. Big meeples are "prophets" in this game, and score double for the city they complete. Sheep and wolves are similar to the tigers and deer from "Hunters and Gatherers". A new scoring twist is added when you move the Ark of the Covenant past your meeples to gain points. Ark of the Covenant seems like a worthy addition to the Carcassonne line. If you like Carcassonne, you'll like Ark of the Covenant.
Another new game in the Carcassonne line is Carcassonne: The Castle. This is a two player game from the minds of Klaus-Jurgen Wrede and Reiner Knizia where you try to build towers, houses, courts and paths. Tiles are laid within the Castle framework which gives the game definite boundaries, unlike other Carcassonne games. I took an early lead, but Gail won with better end game scoring. We both enjoyed the game.
